Rome

Rome wasn’t built in a day but I’m sure glad it was built in Italy.

The only time I’d been to Rome before was for a day trip from Sorrento so it was a rush round to do all the touristy things before the late train back.

In June 2007 it was time to go back and take my time at a leisurely pace. If you are staying central then all the sights are within walking distance.

I would definitely recommend a climb up to the top of St Peters Basilica to see the stunning panorama. Also a walk around the area of the Colosseum and Forum to take a step back to Roman times.

There are plenty of cafes and the like near the Pantheon and Piazza Navona. I had quite an exciting time here as all the dodgy handbags sellers done a runner as the police came in from all sides. What entertainment with my pasta and Chianti.

The Trevi Fountain doesn’t disappoint. Situated in a tiny square you get a great buzz. You might even drift off an imagine yourself in a scene from La Dolce Vita. Look out for people using these extending magnet sticks to get money out of the fountain. You will shake your head but also have a wee chuckle.

Theres plenty of sights round every corner so take your time and digest the city. You might find it worthwhile early in your trip taking one of the open-topped bus tours. This will help you get your bearings and a feel for Rome..
